CIRE2N

As the need for a talent pipeline of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs increases  in the nano-scientific community; the CREST-Center for Innovation, Research, and Education in Environmental Nanotechnology (CIRE2N) is dedicated to the education of environmentally-conscious undergraduate and graduate students using the latest technology, discoveries, and educational material for a successful integration in the scientific workforce.  The center is based in the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras Campus and includes students from UPR-Mayaguez and Cayey as well as partnerships with UAGM.  The efforts carried out in the lab by students and researchers are focused on the development of nanomaterials and devices to address environmental issues and education in environmental nanotechnology.

OUR VISION

We offer a wide range of training packages in a variety of subject areas and blended training opportunities that can accommodate to each student’s needs.  The training packages are oriented so that the student can choose between a hands-on experience in the classroom with the opportunity to discuss with other learners, or to study in his/her own time and pace with one of our e-learning packages.  Both options can be combined to best meet every student’s lifestyle.

OBJECTIVES

The overarching philosophy in CIRE2N is based upon the fundamental understanding that research and education is a vehicle to achieve self-sustainability and to develop the future Hispanic STEM workforce.

One of the primary objectives of CIRE2N is to strengthen Hispanic STEM education through technical nanotechnology areas outlined in this proposal.   The best practices will be implemented through the institution.   A citizen-based research initiative will be established and to help communities make informed decisions and establish public policies related to environment conservation practices and the use of environmental nanotechnology.

Education and Training in Environmental Nanotechnology: CIRE2N will support the professional development and training of undergraduate and graduate students, K-12 teachers, and faculty members in their respective research areas. CIRE2N will provide our undergraduate and graduate students with the necessary tools to develop successful STEM careers and information on progress; retention of students and other metrics and best practices will be shared amongst the Center partners through a collaborative network.

OUR GOALS

Study and understand the interactions that occur when nanomaterials are utilized for the remediation of water and soil,

To develop nanomaterials for the adequate sensing of contaminants in the environment,

To assess the capturing of contaminants for energy conversion.

OUR MISION

We offer a range of training packages in a range of subject areas and can offer blended learning opportunities to best meet your needs. If sitting in a room with a trainer and having the opportunity for discussion with other learners sounds good to you then we can offer this. If you prefer to study in your own time and at your own speed then one of our world class facilities.

If you prefer to study in your own time and at your own speed then one of our e-learning packages may be right up your street. There is a third option, which is you like the sound of both but perhaps can’t attend all training sessions, this is when blended learning comes into its own.
